Living in Cornwall with easy access to some of the most stunning
coastlines in the world I am fascinated by the interaction of the
sea and the land. I am always drawn to the sea and captivated by it.
I can often be transported into deep time when contemplating the
photogenic qualities of its rugged, rocky backdrop...

There are a few places in the UK where fishing
boats launch from and land their catch on the beach. Small
Cornish coves like Cadgwith and Port Isaac still maintain
small fleets but the most striking are those on the shingle
banks between Dungeness and Hastings. The Hastings fleet is
apparently the largest in Europe. But another smaller fleet
launches from the long shingle beach at Beer in Devon which
is where these photographs were taken. Thanks to photographer
Belinda Jiao for the inspiration.

Many photographers have been praising the artistic possibilities
when using the Holga medium format camera with its vignetting, light
leaks and double exposures. So, despite its pretty rudimentary plastic
construction I just had to try one. It is actually quite well thought
out with its 6x6 format changeable to 6x4.5 using a different internal
mask. The addition of a glass lens also improves the quality of the
image but the vignetting still gives an antique feel which I rather like.
Shutter speed is fixed at about 1/125sec but the two aperture choice of
f8 and f11 can be extended with a push on filter adapter and various
filters. The camera does have an archaic red window on the back to view
the frame number. For modern panchromatic films this is a source of light
leaks through the back of the film. This should be covered over with
removable adhesive tape or ideally, an orthochromatic film that is
insensitive to red light should be used.
